1. The Zero-Step
Entry PowerPoint Presentation:
"Entryways: Constructing Attractive,
Low-Cost Zero-Step Entrances"
Over the years, we have found that the question most
asked by builders is, "How do we construct the zero-step
entrance?" So we created this PowerPoint to
address that question in detail.
An introductory section on the Benefits of zero-step
entrances is followed by sections covering Myths,
Basic Construction Principles, Methods, and
Costs. The intended audiences include
builders, architects, architecture students and
advocates of all types who need to answer
builders' and policy makers'
questions with knowledge and confidence.
This tool contains more than 50 photographs of homes
with zero-step entrances, in a wide variety of styles,
price ranges and locales, as well as drawings, charts
and construction details. Show time is
approximately 40 minutes. There is no cost to download.
The need to encrypt the content unfortunately
prevents compatibility with Macs at this time.
Registration is requested prior to downloading, and
the file requires a PC with PowerPoint 2003 or later to
view and save.

2. The
DVD........."BUILDING
BETTER NEIGHBORHOODS"
Transferred to DVD from the original video shot in
1994, this 2005 educational tool contains updated
information on Interior Doors, Townhouses, and
Visitability Progress. Although the original
video was shot on a low budget and
leaves something to be desired for "true" colors, it remains
unsurpassed as a tool for opening discussion of
Visitability with many different types of
audiences. In the video, a
construction engineer, an architect, and advocates
with disabilities from ages 12 to 84 make the case that every new home with
basic access is a needed and practical reform to current building practices. Abundant footage of people and houses makes Building Better Neighborhoods
both a "how to" and a "why to" tool. The 18-minute length is excellent for
showing as a jump-off-point for discussions and planning for
change. Open-captioned for hearing-impaired
viewers.
Scenes from the DVD:
Gerald welcomes his friend Valencia to his
visitable home.
A non-disabled homeowner finds it easy to move in heavy boxes.
Gil Nicolson, as a Habitat for Humanity construction engineer, explains why
Habitat Atlanta
decided in 1989 to build all homes visitable--more than
800 homes as of 2006
3. Intro to Visitability
Sometimes what's needed is a short, clear
overview to show to a legislator or city planner, set up
on a continuous loop display at a conference table, use
as part of a panel discussion, etc.
This approximately 6-minute Power Point
introduces the three core features of
Visitability with pictures and text, and is designed to educate and persuade.
